A Realistic Guide That Actually Works

Costa Rica offers volcanoes, rain forests, wildlife, waterfalls, and beaches - often all in one trip. The challenge isn’t what to do. It’s deciding what not to do.
After traveling here in different seasons and regions, here’s the biggest takeaway: The best Costa Rica itinerary is about balance, not packing everything in.
1. Choose Fewer Places Than You Think
Costa Rica looks small, but travel days are long. Driving a short distance can still take forever due to potholes, windy mountain roads, and traffic. You also DO NOT want to drive at night or in an afternoon rain storm. This is where pre-trip planning is key!
- 3-4 days → 1 region
- 5-8 days → 2 regions
- 9–12 days → 3 regions
Less moving = more time for adventure, downtime, and sunset swims.
2. Pick Regions Based on What You Want to Experience
Instead of chasing highlights, choose based on vibe.
- Jungle & wildlife
- Adventure & waterfalls
- Beach & downtime
You don’t need every ecosystem — Costa Rica rewards depth. You can also mix & match based on driving distance. My first trip vote is definitely La Fortuna + Manuel Antonio. You get the best of all worlds while minimizing (SOME) of the drive.
3. Plan Around the Season
Both seasons are great, but they matter.
- Green season (May–Oct): cheaper, greener, fewer crowds, afternoon rain
- Dry season (Dec–Apr): sunnier, busier, more expensive
Plan outdoor activities for mornings, especially in green season. Learn more here.
4. Pre-Book What Matters
Book ahead:
- National parks with timed entry
- Ziplining, catamarans, must-do tours
Book later:
- Night hikes, ATVs, coffee/chocolate tours, smaller local experiences
Leave flexibility - weather and energy levels change.
5. Budget Honestly (Costa Rica Isn’t Cheap)
Costa Rica often costs more than people expect.
Adds up fast:
- Guided activities
- National Park fees
- Restaurants & Food
- Rental cars, gas, parking
Easy savings:
- Beach days are free (sometimes small parking fees and/or beach rentals)
- Wildlife spotting from lodges and trails
- Local sodas for meals (which can also be the most tasty)
Some of the best days are slow days — beach, books, sunsets.
Smart rhythm: one paid “wow” activity per day (or every other day), balanced with free time.
6. Build in Rest
Heat, humidity, early mornings, and afternoon rains are real.
Alternate:
- Big activity day
- Easy beach or town day (there are some great town days to be had in La Fortuna, Cocoa, Tamarindo, Samara, & Monteverde).
- If in a place like La Fortuna, plan to be in the hot springs in the afternoon
The magic often happens when nothing is scheduled.
Final Thought
Costa Rica shines when you slow down. Pick fewer places, plan the highlights, and leave space to be surprised.
