Manuel Antonio vs. Uvita: Which Costa Rica Beach Town Is Right for Your Family?
If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica’s central or southern Pacific coast, chances are you’ve stared at a map and asked yourself: Should we stay in Manuel Antonio or drive an hour and a half farther south to Uvita?
Only 45 miles apart, these two towns have pretty different feels. Here is our unfiltered breakdown to help you decide which one fits your style best—or if you should double down and do both!

| Naughty Monkey in Manuel Antonio Park |
Manuel Antonio: Scattered Hillside Dining & Tour Hub
Rather than having a single "main strip," Manuel Antonio spreads out across a winding, steep hillside road that connects Quepos to the entrance of Manuel Antonio National Park. Along this main corridor, you'll find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops tucked into the jungle hillsides with stunning ocean views. The public beach also has horses for rent (which means horse poop), sales people, and other bustle.
Learn more about Manuel Antonio activies in our 7 Day Costa Rica Itinerary.
Teen Factor: Great for teens who want active days—zip-lining, surf rentals, and immediate access to tour operators right near the national park entrance.
The Catch: It is busy and heavily visited. You will be sharing the roads and park trails with plenty of tour buses, traffic, and overly bold wildlife (watch out for the beach raccoons and capuchin monkeys!).
Beaches: The beach inside the park is by far the best, though you will need to pay the park entry fee to access it. The public beach outside is free, but expect a steady stream of local vendors and eager parking attendants—we definitely recommend paying the attendants to keep things smooth! If you're looking for a non-park recommendation, our absolute favorite is Playa Biesanz. We LOVE it!
Our Playa Biesanz and Manuel Antonio beach notes are in the 7-day itinerary.
Uvita: Hidden Dirt Paths & Unfiltered Charm
Uvita has a completely different, rustic vibe. The area is laid-back and spread out along quiet dirt paths where you can stroll around and stumble across incredible hidden-gem restaurants tucked around the corner.
The Dining & Food Scene: The food in Uvita is genuinely fun and surprising - you'll find fantastic local sodas, craft food spots, and cozy spots tucked away down quiet side roads. And some pretty good ones on the main road too.
Nearby Day Trips (Dominical & Sierpe/Cano Island):
🌊Dominical: Just 15 minutes north, this laid-back surf town features a livelier beach village feel with surf shops, outdoor cafes, and famous waves that teens will love watching or riding. Definitely be careful swimming and check tide tables.
🌊Cano Island from Sierpe: A huge attraction for snorkeling and WHALE watching. Learn more about why I recommend going the Sierpe route and not directly from Uvita in our Caño Island combo tour review.

| Morning Walk on The Whale Tail |
- Beaches: Marino Ballena National Park might just be the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen. Each morning, we checked the tide tables and hiked out along the iconic Whale’s Tail, swimming in glassy, crystal-clear water before starting our day (no horse poop!). We returned in the evenings for sunset, where we’d often spot white-faced capuchin monkeys in the trees. While Marino Ballena does require an entry fee, there are plenty of incredible beaches nearby, including Playa Ventanas, a super cool spot known for its sea caves, as well as several other free public beaches.

Why Pick Just One?
